Mountain Navigation Skills is the next step from Explore Navigation Skills with a focus on mountain navigation strategies, contour interpretation, shape of the land and slope aspect. Mountain Navigation Skills is guided by Ged Lawless, a qualified and experienced Mountain Leader (ML), and is held outdoors in the Brecon Beacons National Park, Bannau Brycheiniog, Wales UK.

What you will learn

Route planning and records of intentions

Choosing a compass

Map scales, signs & symbols

The grid reference system

Setting the map

Relating the map to land, and land to map

Ticking off and linear features

Measuring timing and distance

Taking and following a bearing

Using transit points and back bearings

Aiming off and attack points

Contours and reading between the lines

Slope aspect and shape

Relocation techniques

Grid, true north and magnetic variation

Introduction to Apps and GPS

Staying safe in the outdoors

Dealing with emergencies
